Who are the millionaires and billionaires of the rap world?
Here are the richest rappers of all time.
#1: Kanye West
Net worth: $1.3 billion
Kanye West has had a love-hate relationship with Forbes for a couple of years, as he’s been trying desperately –without success– to get on their billionaires list. West was finally accepted into ten-figure list this year, though Forbes doesn’t agree with his reported net worth.
Simply put, West claims he’s worth over $3 billion, but Forbes says his actual fortune adds up to about $1.3 billion. Still, that’s enough for Forbes to officially declare West a billionaire. This announcement came after West submitted financial records connected to his Yeezy sneaker company. Forbes had been asking for those records for a while, as they were the main source of West assets and there was no way he could slip into the billionaires club without those numbers.
Forbes finally reviewed the records in 2019 and agreed that West deserved the spot, but not at the level he expected. That’s because even though Yeezy is completely owned by West, the company is closely tied to Adidas, which not only produces but also distributes the shoes. As a result, Forbes would only consider a portion of the profits as West’s net worth.
Net worth: $1 billion
In 2019, Forbes crowned Jay-Z as the first hip-hop billionaire. While much of his early fortune comes from his very successful 14 albums, Jay-Z also owns stock in a number of businesses and companies, including the champagne brand Armand de Brignac, Microsoft’s Bing, a few nightclubs, and Tidal, a subscription music streaming service.
While he lost the first place on the list to Kanye West, there’s always a chance he might get it back, as his fortune of $1 billion was a rough estimate when it was first counted by Forbes. With so many businesses underway, it’s very possible he’ll march right back to the top by 2021.
#3: P. Diddy
Net worth: $740 million
The former Puff Daddy has put music sort of in the back burner and now makes most of its money from business and ventures. For years, the main driver of his fortune has been Ciroc Premium Vodka. Although the drink is produced by distributed by UK company Diageo, Sean “Diddy” Combs is in charge of marketing and receives equal-share venture profits from sales.
#4: Dr. Dre
Net worth: $800 million
Like West, Dr. Dre really wanted to be part of the billionaire’s club and proclaimed himself a billionaire in 2014. This came right after selling his “Beats by Dr. Dre” to Apple for a very impressive $2.6 billion. However, Forbes refuted the claim almost right away, claiming he only owned a percentage of the company at the time of the sale, plus there were debts to be paid and money to be shared. The result? Dr. Dre ended up with “just” about $500 million from that sale.
Even with other assets added up, his estimated net worth is well below the billion dollar mark at the moment.
Net Worth: $230 Million
There’s a big jump down in total net worth between position #4 and #5 – a whooping $570 million jump to be exact. Still, position #5 on the list is unique for many reasons. For starters, Eminem is without a doubt the most successful hip hop/rapper singer of all time.
Eminem’s net worth has changed over the years, but in 2020, he’s worth enough to push Drake, Master P, Usher, and Ice Cube off the top 5 list.
In addition to his albums – he’s sold over 40 million copies in the US alone – Eminem also earns money from a number of endorsement deals. The two biggest ones were a deal with Dr. Dre to promote Beats by Dre and his promotion of Chrysler during the company’s Super Bowl ad in 2011. He’s also earned money as an actor, producer and director. His movie “8 Mile” was loved by critics and earned him an Oscar for his song “Lose Yourself.”
