Business Controversies

In June 2017, Kylie and Kendall announced that they would release a line of vintage T-shirts for their Kendall + Kylie clothing line called Rock vs. Rap. The t-shirts would feature the images of several influential rock and rap artists, such as Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Pink Floyd, Metallica, The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Ozzy Osbourne. The shirts also featured pictures of the Jenner sister superimposed over the images of the artists.

However, the announcement of the product line got immediate criticism from the representatives and relatives of the musicians featured on the shirts, including Sharon Osbourne, Jim Jampol and Voletta Wallace, Notorious B.I.G.’s mother. People on social media also called the t-shirts “insensitive” since many of the celebrities featured on the shirts had passed away. Wallace, as well as The Doors’ manager and the estate of Jim Morrison issued a cease-and-desist letter to the Jenner sisters, stating that Kylie and Kendall were not authorized to use the likeness of these musicians. The Jenners apologized and pulled the shirts from retail.

Kylie Jenner appeared on the August 2018 issue of Forbes. The publication estimated that Jenner’s net worth was $900 million and that she was close to becoming the youngest self-made billionaire. This would mean that Jenner made more money that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who become a billionaire when he was 23. However, Forbes’ use of the term “self-made” was met with significant criticism and scoffing online. Critics stated that Jenner was not self-made, since she was already born into fortune and fame.

Much of society made a joke about Jenner’s “self-made billionaire” status. Dictionary.com took to Twitter to define “self-made” to reinforce the notion that people who make money themselves without having rich families are self-made. Comedian Fat Jew even jokingly started a GoFundMe page to help Kylie earn another $100 million so she would officially be a billionaire. Comedian Michelle Wolf also performed a comedy act that went viral about Jenner’s fame and success. On a more serious note, journalists wrote pieces on inequality and inheritance and wealth distribution to explore Jenner’s success.

Kim Kardashian, Jenner’s half-sister, and socialite Paris Hilton defended Jenner from the backlash. Kardashian and Hilton confirmed that Kylie is a self-made billionaire and has worked hard to achieve her goals. Hilton also stated that she, too, is self-made, even though she comes from a wealthy family. Jenner responded to the criticism by stating “the self-made thing is true…my parents told me I needed to make my own money, it’s time to learn how to save and spend your own money, stuff like that. What I’m trying to say is, I did have a platform, but none of my money is inherited.
